How to match colours
Over a few years I have found that matching colours is one of the most difficult things in managing a wardrobe. It is also important to consider the mood and message you want to convey through your colour combination. Experimentation and practice are key in understanding what works well together and creating visually appealing and cohesive colour combinations.
Here are the 9 golden rules for combining colours effectively:
1. Do not match 😊 I know how it sounds. But when it comes to choosing colours for your outfit, it's generally advised to not use too many colours. A harmonious and balanced look can be achieved by selecting a few colours that complement each other well. A contrast (between two or three colours) works much more than the obsessive matching of a single colour from head to toe.
2. Start with monochromatic look. A monochromatic look is wearing one colour from head to toe, it is very trendy and creates a statement look. When you keep your overall outfit the same colour, the outcome can be just as striking as wearing a bold pattern or vivid colour. Remember, there are some rules wearing a monochromatic look – keep the temperature the same (cool or warm) and the intensity must be the same too (soft or bright).
3. Make sure you know your undertone. For warm undertones, earthy and warm shades like oranges, reds, and browns tend to look great. Cool undertones can be complemented by blues, purples, and pinks. By paying attention to your undertone, you can create colour combinations that make you look your best and everything goes with everything.
4. Match the intensity, not the tone. When creating colour combinations, it is more important to match the intensity or saturation of colours rather than focusing solely on the undertone or tone. Combining colours with similar levels of brightness or intensity can help create a cohesive and visually appealing look. This can be achieved by combining vibrant and bold colours together or by opting for softer, more muted shades. By considering the intensity of colours, you can create a harmonious balance in your colour combinations.
5. Do you have to match accessories, such as shoes or bags? It used to be a 'rule' until late 90's. But for a decade the answer is no, unless it is a very formal occasion, but prefer to play with contrast when combining accessories. Always respect the above rules.
6. How to match colours to a pattern? Very easy. identify one dominant colour in the pattern and use that as a base for selecting other pieces or accessories.
If the pattern is busy or has multiple colours, choose one or two secondary colours from the pattern to coordinate with solid-coloured items. It's also important to consider the scale of the patterns - pairing a larger-scale pattern with a smaller-scale one or a solid colour can help maintain balance and avoid overwhelming the overall look.
7. Create a base of your wardrobe. In the creation of a wardrobe base, it's essential to have versatile and timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched easily. Start with neutral colours like black, white, navy, and grey for core items such as pants, skirts, and blazers. Having a few basic tops in neutral or classic colours like white, black, and beige is crucial. Building upon this base, you can then introduce pops of colour and patterns through accessories or accent garments to personalize your style and create different looks.
8. Do not rely on black only 😉 While black is a versatile and classic colour, you must consider the possibility of doing without black. It remains a beautiful (not) colour, but you can live very well without it. Trust me!

9. Inspire yourself by Nature. As we know, colour analysis is based on four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter) and therefore, let yourself be inspired by Nature, she knows how to make only beautiful things: the trees of a forest, the petals of flowers, the coat of animals, the sea, and her species...
In conclusion, matching colours can be difficult and there are some exceptions. By starting with neutral colours and incorporating pops of colour and patterns, you can personalize your style and create endless outfit possibilities. Remember, the key is to choose pieces that align with your personal style and make you feel confident and comfortable. One more advice, please do not match more than three colours in your outfit. Happy combining 😊
